Endomychus biguttatus Say (Endomychidae), a handsome fungus beetle

Checklist of Coleoptera Known from Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Coleoptera Taxonomic Working Group (TWIG) at the Louisiana State Arthropod Museum

Christopher Carlton, TWIG Coodinator

Information contained on the list includes, family, subfamily (in part), genus and species, a comment line, source(s) of the record, and references to publications dealing with GSMNP beetles. In cases of species for which numerous sources of records are available, usually only the initial record is given.

If you have records that need to be included on updated versions of the list, please send us the complete species name, including author, the family it belongs in, and the source of the record and/or location of authoritatively identified specimens. Also, there are undoubtedly errors in some of the entries, and I would appreciate having those called to my attention. Questionable determinations will be noted in the comment line, but the records will not be removed until the mistake is confirmed and/or corrected. Feel free to save and sections of the Excel file and send me updated versions, but PLEASE, if you do so, flag the new records so I can review them prior to posting (e.g., "NEW RECORD" or "CORRECTION", etc.).

Families and subfamilies recognized in the checklist for the most part are those given by Lawrence and Newton (1995). Total number of species in a given family is indicated by the number at the first entry for that family.

Other Coleoptera lists: The list presented here does not include species from regional lists that might be expected to occur in the park. These include species documented from the states (i.e., North Carolina and Tennessee) where GSMNP is located or from adjacent areas of the southern Appalachians but are not necessarily based on specimens collected within the park. I am aware of two such lists:

Carabidae, compiled by Terry Erwin.

Chrysomelidae, Identification Guide to the Leaf Beetles of Great Smoky Mountain National Park by Edward G. Riley

Scarabaeidae, compiled by Philip Harpootlian
