PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Animal Science Department at LSU offers exceptional educational experiences both at the
undergraduate (Bachelor of Science) and graduate levels (Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy).
Graduate programs offer training in Breeding and Genetics, Growth and Metabolic Physiology, Meat
Science and Technology, Ruminant and Nonruminant Nutrition, Poultry Physiology and Nutrition, and
Reproductive Physiology and
Biotechnology. Research is performed with beef cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, and various
laboratory species. Interactions of Animal Science faculty with scientists within the School of
Veterinary Medicine, Pennington Biomedical Research Institute, and Louisiana Agricultural Experiment
Stations throughout the state provide a vast array of research opportunities for Animal Science
undergraduate and graduate students.
FACILITIES
Research facilities available to faculty and students in Animal Science include the Purebred
Beef Unit, the Beef Cattle Crossbreeding Unit, the Swine Unit, the Horse Farm, the Sheep Farm, a brand new Poultry Unit,
and the Nutrition and Metabolism Unit, all located on the Central Research Station of the
Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station approximately three miles south of campus. All
farms are fully supported by LAES personnel. A well equipped
Embryo Biotechnology
Laboratory is located at the St. Gabriel Research Station, 10 miles from campus, which
also houses herds of beef cattle, horses and goats for research.
On campus, there are several well equipped nutrition laboratories, a
standard meat laboratory, a radioimmunoassay laboratory in or near Francioni Hall, as well
as a complete biotechnology laboratory in Ingram Hall. The interdisciplinary
Muscle Foods Laboratory, located near Ingram Hall, is equipped with state-of-the-art
processing equipment for meats research.
