Project Leader -- January 1986 to Present, Rice Research Station, Crowley, LA

Determine N requirements for new varieties and experimental lines. Determine N placement in relation to water management in all rice cultural systems. Investigate N requirement and timing for second crop rice. Determine feasibility of rice production in reduced tillage and no tillage systems. Evaluate alternative rice tillage effects on soil conservation and water quality. Determine impact of recommended cropping practices on sustainability of rice production systems and on the environment. Investigate gaseous emissions from rice fields and the contribution to the greenhouse effect. Develop an integrated approach to red rice control. Evaluate silicate slag applications to rice for improved disease resistance. Major areas of research interest

Adaptation and improvement of rice cultural practices

Statewide evaluations of commercial rice varieties and advanced experimental lines for yield improvement - main and ratoon crop evaluation

Improvement of fertilizer efficiency in flooded rice culture

Conservation tillage - improvement of water quality and reduction in soil and nutrient losses

Evaluation of sustainable rice production practices

Assessment of gaseous emissions from flooded rice culture
