FOUNDATION RICE SEED
OBJECTIVES: NOT-PROVIDED
APPROACH: The foundation program will be continued along the
same lines. The basic red rice research will be continued. Additional work is
planned in the area of chemical-cultural control of red rice.
PROGRESS: 1984/01 TO 1999/06
Foundation seed rice has
been produced by the Rice Research Station since 1949. Since its inception, the
foundation seed program has made available to Louisiana growers over 5900 metric
tons of pedigreed seed stock of 30 varieties. Each year, the Rice Research
Station devoted approximately 32 hectares of land to the production of certified
seed production. This included: headrow seed to replenish breeder seed stocks;
breeder seed, planting stock for the foundation fields; and foundation seed, the
planting stock from which registered seed is produced. In 1996, a new foundation
seed rice drying and processing facility was constructed. The new facility
allowed the Rice Research Station to handle the foundation seed crop in a more
efficient manner, thus, enabling the foundation seed program to better maintain
purity and viability of its seed rice.
